The Lao Cultural Exchange Forum on June 14, Smithfield, Rhode Island.
LAO CULTURE CONNECTION FORUM
On behalf of the Laotian Community Center, Smithfield, Rhode Island, we would like to present the Lao Cultural Exchange Forum on June 14, 2009 by Noi Sengsourigna from Laos, a singer, musician, architectural designer, and founder of the Sengsourigna Children’s Music Center (SCMCC).
The Laotian Community Center and Lao Heritage Foundation have advocated for cultural preservation through almost a decade of arts and cultural program activities. This year past year LCC and LHF have collaborated on Lao traditional music projects that we hope will strengthen our children's learning and create a vibrant community in Rhode Island.
The Lao Cultural Exchange forum objectives are to provide cultural exchange opportunities between Laotian artists and non-artists, and foster professional interests between Laos and the United States. In this forum, people of all ages from Lao or American communities interested in Lao arts and culture, will come together and share their thoughts and perspectives on building connections to develop an appreciation and understanding of Lao cultural values in this country.
This year our candidate for the Lao Cultural Exchange 2009 is from Laos. She is passionate about music, and passing along her learning to children just as her father passed this along to her and other children at Sihome Village, Vientiane, Laos.
Noi Sengsourigna drew inspiration as early as the age of five from the Traditional Music Center run by her father. By the age of seven she became the youngest to play “dulcimer” or “kim” in a traditional musical group.
“At that time children came to the Center and played in the traditional band called “Red Flower.”
The red flower is the symbol for passion. And it was then that Noi discovered her passion – giving the gift of music so children can learn, thrive and even heal.
We hope that the success of this cultural exchange program and partnership will increase interest in young people's learning and development. Our center welcomes all social and ethnic groups to participate in this unique, aesthetic, and artistic expression of Laotian culture
